Austria

Whether getting your fix of the the von Trapps or Mozart, the hills truly are alive with the sound of music! Margaret adored her time in Austria while traveling with her cousin, and Maid of Honor, Jillian. A simply magical country, every destination delights! It is no wonder bridesmaid Kat adored her time there while her parents were stationed in Vienna on a diplomatic mission. Shand especially loved singing in the myriad stunning churches with his Select Ensemble.

Some favorites include:

  • Vivacious Vienna

    • Don your best and catch an opera or ballet at the historic and beautiful Weiner Staatsoper. If you are patient enough, you can stand in line to get top-ring tickets for only a few euros!​

    • Analyze your inner id at the Freud Museum.

    • Eat a schnitzel bigger than your head. 

    • Admire the graceful, powerful, and well-trained Lippizanner Stallions at the world-renown Spanish Riding School. Where else in the world do equestrians practice under crystal chandeliers??

    • Indulge in traditional pastries, like Mozart Torte or Sacher Torte, alongside afternoon tea at the Sacher Hotel.

    • Listen to some classical music! It is named the "City of Music" for a reason.

    • Wander through the beautiful and clean streets and parks.

    • Let your inner royal shine at Schönbrunn Palace, the elaborate summer palace of the Hapsburg Dynasty. You could take weeks just to wander the delightful gardens and 1,441 palace rooms. If you love your royal history, a trip to the Sisi Museum is a great way to learn about the famous Empress.

  • Stunning Salzburg 

    • This beautiful city is a must-see for anyone who loves the Sound of Music as much as Margaret. It is her absolute favorite movie of all time. She was on cloud nine the entire duration of the Sound of Music tour.

    • Learn to make some crisp apple strudel (or doorbells or sleigh bells or schnitzel with noodles).

    • Tour the childhood home of Mozart.

    • Take in the sights of the the beautiful lakeside mountain town of Hallstatt.

    • Wander the many art galleries.

    • Experience the many trick fountains of Schloss Hellbrunn. Be careful—you may get soaked!

    • No trip to Salzburg would be complete without a stop at the delightful Mirabell Gardens. 

    • Check in with your spiritual side at St. Peter's Archabbey. This Benedictine monastery, catacombs, and cathedral has been continuously inhabited since 696! The grounds are not only historic, but also tranquil and impressive, especially the hauntingly beautiful cemetery. Don't forget to stop by the abbey shop on your way out to peruse myriad handmade wares crafted by the monks. Margaret

  • Alpine Adventure

    • ​From skiing, biking, and hiking to more extreme sports, the Austrian Alps are an outdoorsperson's dream. No wonder Red Bull was founded here.

    • Experience the culture and charm of small mountain villages at a much more affordable price than other countries like Switzerland.
