Thursday Tapas Tour

Across the City

If you plan to arrive early, we would love to show you around! Join Margaret, Shand, and their friends for small-group tapas crawls across the city. Grab your walking shoes, some euros, and meet us in the Plaza!

Please let us know in advance if you plan to attend via the RSVP link. This will allow us to divvy up groups and ensure we have enough tour guides ready.

Welcome Party

Restaurante Las Tomasas

Vino, tapas, and fabulous views of the Alhambra backed by the Sierra Nevada. We can't wait to welcome you to Granada!

The restaurant is accessible by taxi. However we highly recommend walking due to the Cruces de Mayo festival traffic. There are hills involved to consider practical shoes.

The Ceremony

La Iglesia de San Gil y Santa Ana

La Iglesia de Santa Ana was an obvious choice for Margaret & Shand. It sits in the heart of Granada in Plaza Nueva, right across the street from their school. The two passed it, gazed out the window at it, and peeked inside innumerable times during their courtship.

The church began its life in 1501 as the Mosque of Almanzra during the Mudéjar Period. After the Reconquista of Ferdinand and Isabel, it was converted into a Catholic Church. It contains some of the finest early sacred architecture in the city. One of only two minarets surviving from the Nazrid Dynasty sits atop its steeple (the other is preserved in the Alhambra Museum). Across its history, it has hosted many famous events, including the marriage of the 19th century Spanish heroine, Mariana Pineda. Santa Ana is also the patron saint of married women.

Getting to the Reception

After the ceremony, guests will follow the bride and groom on foot from the church to the reception venue. All attending will walk together along the stunning Paseo de los Tristes and enjoy the sights.

The Paseo de los Tristes, or Walk of the Sad, was named for the funeral processions which passed along it in the 19th century. Despite its name, it is also known as the most romantic street in Granada. Meandering along the Rio Darro (River of Gold), the avenue passes a beautiful array of buildings and medieval bridges, all beneath stunning views of the Alhambra above.

Bring shoes (or a spare pair) you can walk in! It is an easy stroll less than 0.4 miles, but the end has a small hill.

The Reception

Carmen de los Chapiteles

From the Arabic karm, meaning vine, carmens are traditional Moorish mansions in Granada. These houses belonged to the wealthy elite during the Middle Ages. As the name suggests, typical carmens possess ornate, often terraced, gardens filled with a mixture of ornamental and agricultural plants, accented by beautiful water features.

Inside, the house is built around a central courtyard, usually with a fountain in the middle. You will often spot inward-facing balconies running across the length of the second story. Since most conquistadors hailed from Andalusia, this traditional Islamic style inspired house forms across the Spanish Colonies.

Carmen de los Chapiteles dates to the 14th century, and is named for its numerous slender spires. It sits just below the Alhambra and Generalife, with views over the city and across to the Albayzín. In the past, it was known as the home of the "Rich Moor, Abu-Jamr." A doctor considered a bohemian, poet, liberal, and hedonist, he was also known for providing generous medical care to the poor of the city, and for his love of old books.

Besides its beauty, Margaret and Shand chose Carmen de los Chapiteles because it is the site of one of their favorite pictures together from their time abroad. They hope you enjoy its history and charm, as well as the sweeping views from the Alhambra to Sacromonte as the sun sets.
