Margaret & Shand's Thoughts
Picking which airport to fly into is a balance between cost, convenience, and travel plans. Madrid, Sevilla, and the beaches near Málaga are all destinations in their own right, so this may be a consideration if you plan on other activities beyond visiting Granada.
If you plan only on visiting Granada, flying into GRX is the most convenient, but can be the most expensive. Shand and Margaret most often used the Málaga airport to travel. It splits the difference between cost and convenience. If you have multiple people in your party, or arrange to travel in a group, the cost of a taxi or driver also becomes much more affordable, and they can drop you right at your hotel.
Whatever your plans, we advise booking early and evaluating multiple options. For more detailed information on getting to Granada please click HERE.

Walking
Like many people who live in medieval cities, Granadinos walk most places. When Shand and Margaret lived there, they frequently reached 20,000 steps a day. The city center is mostly flat, but as Granada sits in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, many other neighborhoods sit atop slopes. Bring good walking shoes!!! The last thing you want is a blister to get in the way of exploring. Margaret and Shand encourage you to walk to most destinations, as that is the best way to get a feel for the history and culture.
Taxi
&
Uber
If you have a further trip, taxis are an excellent and easy mode of transport. Your hotel can call one for you. Additionally, most major points in Granada have taxi stations. While some taxis will take cards, it is preferable to have cash ready in varying denominations. Please note, if you are going to certain destinations in the older portions of the city (e.g., Albayzin or Sacromonte), your taxi may not be able to take you all the way, as many streets are too small and windy for modern vehicles, but they will get you as close as possible. Uber exists in Granada and can be a convenient way to get around. However, unlike taxis, Ubers are not given permission to enter certain restricted streets in historic neighborhoods. Therefore, we recommend taxis.
Train
&
Metro
Spain has the second largest high-speed rail network in the world. The Granada Train Station has access to almost all other major cities in Spain, as well as Portugal and France. It is a small station not far from the city center. It also serves as a station for the brand-new Granada Light Rail. The Light Rail can be of use if going to destinations further from the city center, but we doubt most guests will need to use it. To get from the Train Station to your hotel, we suggest a taxi, especially if you have luggage. Alternatively, you can speak to your hotel to arrange transport to or from the station.
Rentals
&
Chauffeurs
Renting cars in Spain is just like renting cars in the US, and even has many of the same companies operating (e.g., Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis). Additionally, the Spanish drive on the right side, and beyond adjusting from mph to km/h, the rules are the same: wear your seatbelt, don't use your phone while driving, pass on the left, etc. While usually a valid US Passport and US Driver's License are sufficient, if you want to be extra cautious, we also suggest applying for an International Driver's Permit from AAA. We recommend renting a car only if your Spanish journey has multiple destinations.
Private drivers are another great option, especially if you have multiple people in your party, or coordinate travel with friends or family. For example, Málaga Airport Transfers offers car, minivan, and shuttle options. The more people you share the hire with, the more economical it becomes. There are many additional reputable chauffeur companies you can find online.
