The Origin of "Granada"

Granada literally translates to "pomegranate" in Spanish. This holy fruit is often revered as the true forbidden fruit in Genesis, and thus the pomegranate represents the tree of paradise. In Catholicism, it is a symbol of resurrection and eternal life. It is regarded as holy by Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist traditions. Due to its thick skin, the fruit was highly valued by Arab travelers who transversed the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. Perhaps the city was named after the Latin granatum for the many pomegranate trees which grow there. Perhaps it comes from the Arabic gar-arnat, meaning hill of the pilgrims. Regardless, the pomegranate has evolved to become the heraldic symbol of the city, and honors all those who have travelled far and wide to finally find home.

The Granada Game

As the official symbol of the city, the pomegranate is hidden in plain sight throughout Granada. The Granada Game is a challenge to our guests to keep their eyes open and spot as many pomegranates as you can! The winner of the game will win a prize selected by Margaret and Shand. Keep your eyes peeled for this elusive fruit in building façades, street signs, bollards, fences, cobblestone mosaics, fountains, and many more unexpected areas!

How to Play

Margaret and Shand encourage guests to take a picture of every pomegranate they spot in the city (pomegranates on tourist souvenirs don't count). After your trip, submit your pictures here. The guest(s) with the most unique pomegranate pictures will win a special prize selected by Margaret and Shand. Happy hunting!
